Coloplast unveils “a new type of fistula pouch”

19th June 2006

Coloplast has revealed it has developed what it terms as “a new type of fistula pouch”.

It says it is the first product of its kind the Danish-based medical equipment company has produced and it will be marketed in the US at first.

A Coloplast statement read: “The potential market for fistula pouches corresponds to just under two per cent of Coloplast’s existing market for ostomy products. The product is sold to hospitals, which use it in their treatment of patients for up to three months at a time.”

“The new product has been developed in close collaboration with stoma care nurses, who often treat fistulas in exuding wounds,” added the company.

A fistula is a type abnormal passageway or duct that forms from the bowel to the surface of the skin. It often implies that there is a blockage further along in the bowel and it can be caused by an inflammatory diseases, such as Crohn’s disease. It can result in the patient acquiring large exuding wounds.

Fistulas affect almost 25,000 patients each year worldwide.

Coloplast employs approximately 6,000 employees in over 30 countries. Its UK headquarters are based in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. As well as cancer care products, it also provides wound care and continence care equipment.
