Consultation launched on plain cigarette packaging for UK

The government has announced the launch of a new consultation to discuss whether or not to introduce standardised plain packaging for cigarettes sold in the UK.

People, businesses and stakeholder organisations are all being encouraged to submit responses before July 10th 2012, with the key question being whether or not to go ahead with this move, or if other alternatives should be considered.

Respondents will also be asked what requirements might be imposed for the new standardised packaging, as well as the effect these changes would have on consumer habits and the industry.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley said: "Health ministers across the UK have a responsibility to look closely at initiatives that might encourage smokers to quit and stop young people not taking up smoking in the first place."

This comes as part of British government efforts to curb a habit that accounts for more than 100,000 UK deaths each year.

Earlier this month, new laws came into effect that will compel large shops and supermarkets in England to cover up cigarette displays and hide tobacco products from public view.
