Cook Medical commences removability study of Evolution stent

Cook Medical has announced the commencement of its new Evolution fully-covered oesophageal stent study that will assess the viability of post-treatment removal of the device.

This is the first multicentre US study to evaluate the possibility of removing a self-expanding metal stent after malignant and benign strictures have been treated, with devices used in this trial to be modified to accommodate retrieval.

Additionally, researchers will assess the the use of the stent in various oesophageal conditions, including strictures, fistulas, perforations or leaks.

The study will be conducted at up to 15 sites across the US and will enrol a total of 130 patients, with subjects to be followed for the duration of stent placement up to six months.

Barry Slowey, global leader of Cook Medical's endoscopy division, said: "We are very excited to see where this study takes us. We hope that the results of this study will allow for some expanded treatment options for malignant and benign oesophageal diseases."
