Cook Medical unveils self-expanding stent

Cook Medical has announced the launch of its new Zilver Vena Venous Self-Expanding Stent.

The product was made available at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery after approval was granted by Health Canada.

Zilver Vena has been designed to restore blood flow in obstructed iliofemoral veins, a condition associated with post-thrombotic syndrome for patients with deep vein thrombosis.

The flexible stent includes shape memory nitinol, which offers consistent radial force and stent-to-vein wall apposition that is continuous from end to end.

Rob Lyles, vice-president and global leader of the peripheral intervention clinical division at Cook Medical, noted the device is the only product of its kind available.

Mr Lyles stated: "Zilver Vena gives physicians a new treatment option for stenting diseased veins."

At present, the device has been developed in diameters of 14 and 16 mm, with 60, 100 and 140 mm lengths to make sure placement is precise, while 7 Fr sheaths and 9 Fr guiding catheters are compatible with the product.
