Cynosure files patent infringement lawsuit

Cynosure has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against CoolTouch.

The leading developer of light-based aesthetic treatment systems alleges that CoolTouch’s 1320 nm CoolLipo laser system infringes on Cynosure’s exclusive license on the 873 patent, which covers technology using laser energy to remove subcutaneous fat.

The 873 patent is a fundamental component of Cynosure’s Smartlipo LaserBodySculpting Workstation.

This "groundbreaking system" offers an alternative to traditional liposuction for patients with a small area of localised fax.

Michael Davin, Cynosure’s president and chief executive officer, said: "Smartlipo has become the gold standard for the minimally invasive removal of localized fat, and we will vigorously defend our intellectual property position.

"We believe that CoolTouch’s device infringes on the 873 patent, and we initiated this litigation to protect our rights and represent the best interest of our shareholders."

Cynosure develops and markets aesthetic treatment systems that are used to perform non-invasive procedures to remove hair, treat vascular legions, rejuvenate skin through the treatment of shallow vascular and pigmented lesions, laser lipolysis and temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite.
