Daiichi Sankyo to expand atrial fibrillation patient registry scheme

Daiichi Sankyo has announced plans to extend its Prevention of Thromboembolic Events – European Registry in Atrial Fibrillation (PREFER in AF) scheme.

The expansion of the registry will include a specific focus on the use of novel oral anticoagulant therapy including prescribing patterns, providing new insight into the long-term management of patients affected by the condition.

Initially conducted in seven European countries with more than 7,000 patients, it will now collect additional real-life data from approximately 5,000 patients across more than 320 centres in nine European countries, including Belgium and the Netherlands.

The original purpose of the registry was to gain detailed insight into the characteristics and management of AF, with a focus on the prevention of thromboembolic events and stroke.

Dr Jan van Ruymbeke, chief executive officer for Daiichi Sankyo Europe, said: "We aim to provide clinicians with data that can improve future management of AF and VTE and support them in delivering the best outcomes for patients while effectively managing resources."

This comes after the firm announced the commencement of a new phase III trial assessing edoxaban in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing cardioversion earlier this week.
