Dechra releases Finilac – for the treatment of false pregnancy in dogs
Veterinary professionals finally have an alternative way of treating false pregnancy in bitches, in the wake of Dechra’s new product called Finilac. Finilac, which contains cabergoline, comes in a liquid form which can be given to queens and bitches either in food or orally to supress lactation.
The product prevents prolactin secretion by the pituitary gland, therefore preventing all prolactin dependent methods such as lactation. One dosage of 0.1ml per 1kg of bodyweight should be given to the dog daily for a duration of four to six successive days, depending on how severe the clinical condition is.
Carol Morgan, Dechra’s brand manager, stated: “Finilac offers a fresh approach for cases with more severe symptoms that require veterinary intervention. It is easy to administer, either directly into the mouth or by mixing with food, and it doesn’t need to be transported or stored in the refrigerator, making it ideal as an ‘at home’ treatment that can be administered by owners.”
