Defra Handover from Eustice to Jayawardena

Following Liz Truss’ reorganisation of senior ministers in the government on Tuesday night, George Eustice was let go from his position as Defra Secretary. Having taken over in February 2020, Mr. Eustice remarked that working there for nine years had been a “privilege.”

Victoria Prentis, the government’s current minister of agriculture, expressed her great regret over the handover: “As farming minister and more recently as Secretary of State, George – a farmer himself – has been an almost constant presence in Defra for 9 years.”

Ranil Jayawardena, who previously stood as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for International Trade, succeeds Eustice as Environment Secretary.

Born in 1986, Jayawardena attended The London School of Economics and Political Science for 5 years before starting his career as a local government board member aged 27 and becoming a member of parliament for North East Hampshire in 2015.

Mr. Jayawardena commented on his new position, calling it a “privilege” to be chosen.

“From food security and backing British farmers, to water security and growing our rural economy, I know that there is much to do. I recently met local farmers with the NFU, to discuss the government’s support for British farming and the export growth ahead.”
