Dementia advisors begin work

The UK’s first dementia advisors began work this week as a number of demonstrator sites for a new support scheme opened across the country.

In total, 22 demonstrator sites were launched, with another 18 facilities providing a variety of support networks for families and carers.

It is hoped that the centres will help people with dementia – along with their families and carers – to gain better access support. Some of the sites will play a larger role in reaching out to minority groups.

Heralding the move as “the beginning of real change”, care services minister Phil Hope said that he wants to see dementia advisers appointed elsewhere in the country after the launch.

“They will be crucial in making sure people with dementia and their families get the help and support they need,” he explained.

As well as serving as care services minister, Mr Hope is MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire.
