Dental charity report highlights confidence in cancer survival chances

A survey from the Oral Health Foundation has indicated that many people in the UK are confident about their chances of beating cancer if they were diagnosed with the disease.

Although 52.2 percent of those surveyed said they had a family member who had lost their battle with cancer, 33.7 percent remained confident that they would be able to survive the disease if they contracted it themselves.

Moreover, 21 percent believed they would develop cancer at some stage during their life, suggesting this is a prospect that many people have considered and mentally prepared for to some extent.

The charity welcomed the confidence shown towards the disease, noting the significant advances medical science has made in the diagnosis and treatment of many forms of cancer.

However, it was noted that mouth cancer remains one of the most dangerous variants, claiming more than twice as many lives as cervical and testicular cancers combined. As such, early diagnosis is essential to make sure patients have the best possible chance of survival.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive officer of the Oral Health Foundation, said: "Everybody needs to check their mouths regularly for anything unusual, such as ulcers which do not heal within a couple of weeks, any red or white patches and any unusual lumps or bumps in the head or neck area."
