DePuy launches Ci essential hip system

DePuy Orthopaedics, a Johnson & Johnson company, has announced the launch of its Ci essential hip system software which aims to provide new enhancements in the area of computer-assisted hip replacement.

This type of surgery facilitates visualisation of otherwise hidden parts of the anatomy, without the need for fluoroscopy or computed tomography, saving money and improving the positioning of hip implants.

Other benefits of the Ci essential hip system include specially designed screens and menus based on the experience of surgeons in the field and the ability of surgeons to customise their work-flow.

Joe McLaughlin, hip product director at DePuy, said: “The goal of the software design was to increase operating-room efficiency, decrease planning time for the surgeon during surgery and make the software easier to use for the surgeon and the surgeon’s staff.”

The company has noted an increasing demand for hip replacement, attributed in part to the rising number of baby boomers suffering osteoarthritis and the increasing incidence of obesity.

Last month, DePuy announced the launch of its Peak FX hip plate system, with the new technology being the first available treatment for interchanteric hip fractures that can be used in either minimally invasive or standard surgical procedures.
