Diet drinks ‘no better than full-sugar versions’

5th January 2017

People wanting to lose weight or improve their health should steer clear of replacing soft drinks with diet beverages, as they are no more helpful than the full-sugar versions, academics have said.

Comments published by Imperial College London stated people often perceive artificially-sweetened beverages (ASBs) to be healthier and better for their low-fat diet attempts than traditional beverages sweetened with sugar.

However, senior investigator Professor Christopher Millett warned there is no solid evidence to support this, despite claims contained within industry marketing.

Researchers are also concerned that drinking 'diet' products may result in overconsumption of other foods, thereby actually leading to weight gain and contributing to more type 2 diabetes.

"Far from helping to solve the global obesity crisis, ASBs may be contributing to the problem and should not be promoted as part of a healthy diet," the authors concluded.

It comes after previous studied published in the US suggested ASBs may be addictive because they spur drinkers' brains to chase a sugar high that they will never receive.
