DJO Global launches Empi Active Knee TENS system

DJO Global has announced the launch of a new transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) system for use in the treatment of knee pain.

The company's new Empi Active Knee TENS system utilises a specialised wrap with predetermined electrode placement built into it, delivering a TENS waveform to the knee in order to manage acute, chronic and arthritic pain.

It utilises comfortable electrical stimulation to inhibit pain signals from reaching the brain, thus offering a similar physiologic response to pain relief medication, without risk of negative side effects.

This can help patients who have problems tolerating standard medications – such as muscle relaxants or non steroidal anti-inflammatories – to relieve pain symptoms in a way that does not disrupt daily activities.

Mike Mogul, president and chief executive officer of DJO Global, said: "Chronic knee pain from osteoarthritis, tendonitis and other conditions is an obstacle to maintaining healthy and active lifestyles and often leads to prolonged inactivity that can create other, more serious health consequences."

Last month, the company reported its financial results for the second quarter of 2011, a period that was marked by a 14.5 percent increase in sales year over year.
