DoH announces picture warnings on cigarette packets

The Department of Health has claimed that Britain is to “lead the way” on cigarette packaging with the announcement that graphic warning images will be used on all tobacco product packaging as of next year.

Following a consultation last year and market research efforts, 15 images have been chosen to warn consumers of the disturbing adverse effects of tobacco on health, with the UK becoming the first European Union nation to take such measures.

The move has been backed by chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson, who states that the plan will boost awareness of the damage done by smoking and play a key role in reducing the number of individuals who start smoking.

Alan Johnson, health secretary, said: “Picture warnings are the next vital step in reducing the number of people who smoke.

“We are committed to continuing to drive down smoking rates in the UK as smoking remains the number one cause of ill health and early death.”

He added that written warnings currently on cigarette packs have already seen progress in this regard, while further legislation to increase the legal age of sale for tobacco and the recently implemented ban on smoking in public places could potentially save thousands of lives.

The government recently released a report assessing compliance with smokefree legislation a month after its introduction, noting 97 per cent compliance with the new laws.
