Elan and Biogen Idec initiate Tysabri trial in oncology

Elan and Biogen Idec have announced the initiation first clinical trial of Tysabri (natalizumab) in oncology.

The first dose of the compound was administered this week to a multiple myeloma patient in the phase I/II study.

Tysabri is a recombinant, humanised monoclonal antibody that operates by targeting the VLA4 adhesion molecule expressed on the surface of some immune cells.

Biogen Idec and Elan said the objectives of the trial are to assess the potential anti-tumour activity of Tysabri and its safety in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma.

Wayne Saville, director of oncology medical research at Biogen Idec, said: “We are excited to initiate the oncology clinical trial program for Tysabri.”

He added that the compound has potential in multiple myeloma and other cancers through its ability to block VLA4, making it a significant addition to its strong pipeline in oncology.

Elan said the trial marks a chance for Tysabri to continue to address areas of unmet medical needs and potentially bring new treatment options to oncologists and their patients.

In July 2008, Biogen Idec and Elan celebrated the second anniversary of Tysabri as a treatment for patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.
