Elsevier childhood weight gain report to be published

Elsevier has unveiled the details of a new study into obesity in young people, which is set to be published in the Journal of Pediatrics in the near future.

The report explores the best ways in which parents can stem and prevent weight gain in their offspring as part of an examination of the current "childhood obesity epidemic".

It examines the effectiveness of inhibitory control and self-control over practices such as forbidding various foods or restricting consumption and was led by Leann Birch, PhD, of the Center for Childhood Obesity Research at Pennsylvania State University and Stephanie Anzman, MS.

Overall, 197 young girls were used as case studies over a ten-year period and the researchers took into account their parents’ BMI, income and education levels. The report concluded that individuals with low self-control and highly restrictive parents are the most likely to face problems with obesity.

In other Elsevier news, the firm this week announced that it has developed an online resource for nurses that assists them in improving the level of care they provide and preventing time-consuming and costly mistakes.
