Elsevier publication features new Parkinson’s study

Elsevier publication Cortex is set to feature new research into Parkinson’s disease in its September issue, the company has announced.

Undertaken by staff at Brown University’s department of cognitive and linguistic sciences, the research adds to the growing body of evidence that suggests subcortical regions of the brain are important in the diagnosis of the condition.

The eye movements of Parkinson’s patients were recorded as they listened to sentences containing restrictive relative clauses and tried to select a picture that matched it.

It was found that patients who made more errors spent more time looking at pictures that were ruled out by the relative clause when they had heard only as far as that particular clause’s verb.

These participants also showed poor relative-clause and good main-clause processing when relative clauses were located at the ends of sentences, the researchers found.

Last month, Elsevier announced the launch of the Article of the Future project, which aims to redefine the way in which scientific articles are presented on the internet.
