Ethicon unveils new midurethral sling device

Ethicon, the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, is set to launch its new Gynecare TVT Secur System at the International Urogynaecological Association’s annual meeting this week.

The new treatment for female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) incorporates the best features of the Gynecare TVT SUI repair standard, but utilises a less invasive treatment method, according to the manufacturer.

Ethicon said the new system would the reduce patient discomfort associated with skin exits by using a polypropylene mesh implant designed be four times shorter than traditional slings.

The device can be used in a ten to 15-minute procedure under local anaesthetic.

Dr Mickey Karram, director of urogynaecology at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, stated: “The TVT sling changed our thinking about the treatment of SUI, and over time it has proven to be safe and effective.”

“I believe this new technique builds on the clinical experience and offers a more patient-friendly approach that has the potential to reduce some of the reported complications associated with midurethral slings,” he added.

Last week, Ethicon announced the launch of the Ultrapro Hernia System, which utilises the “proven” design of the previous Prolene hernia products in order to keep hernia recurrence rates at a minimum.
