European operations of Sankyo and Daiichi renamed
Sankyo and Daiichi Pharmaceutical have reached the latest step in the merger of the two companies by renaming Sankyo’s European subsidiary.
The company will change from Sankyo Pharma GmbH to become Daiichi Sankyo Europe as part of the merger labelled by the companies as “two traditions, one vision”.
Daiichi Sankyo has its European headquarters based in Munich. The company now employs 1,700 staff in Europe. The merged companies will retain Sankyo’s Chiltern Place facility in Buckinghamshire as the UK headquarters of Daiichi Sankyo Europe.
Takashi Shoda, Daiichi Sankyo’s president and chief executive officer, commented: “Daiichi and Sankyo, two leading Japanese pharmaceutical companies that both have a strong tradition in pharmaceutical research and development, are combining their strengths to become a global pharma innovator.”
“The European part of the merger – based on the know-how and tradition of the two pharmaceutical companies – is the next important step on our way to a joint future,” he added.
Daiichi Sankyo claims to have become one of the top-20 pharmaceutical companies in the world, combining Sankyo’s experience in making statins and diabetes drugs with Daiichi’s antibiotic-focused research and design. Daiichi also recently entered the field of oncology with the release of Camptosar.
Additionally, Daiichi Sankyo claims to have a variety of “best in class” drugs in its research and development pipeline, including Prasugrel, an antiplatelet product said to have a superior profile to previous ADP inhibitor drugs.
