Families’ Desperately Demand Government Support Amid Energy Crisis

25th August 2022

Desperate calls for “radical” help from the prime minister as health is risked over increasing energy bills.

The typical household’s energy bill is anticipated to increase to over £3,600 as of the beginning of October. Following this, further climbs are expected, hitting £5,000 in the new year and surpassing £6,000 in April.

As a result of this, during the coldest part of the year, the four million families that use pre-payment electricity metres will have to allocate about 45% of their disposable income on energy payments each month.

In an attempt to help the least fortunate families in the UK, British Gas will bequeath 10% of their profits to contribute towards these payments.
From 9% in October 2021 to 14% in June, the quantity of families with overdue utility payments has significantly increased; leaving millions of people vulnerable to destroying their credit score.

Jonny Marshall, a senior economist at the Resolution Foundation, explained that “the new prime minister will need to think the unthinkable in terms of the policies needed to get sufficient support to where it’s needed most.”

Since the announcement, a new “solidarity tax” has been established. Meaning households will have a 1% increase on income tax to help pay for a social energy tariff.

Marshall said: “An innovative social tariff could provide broader targeted support but involves huge delivery challenges, while freezing the price cap gives too much away to those least in need.”

“This problem could be overcome with a solidary tax on high earners – an unthinkable policy in the context of the leadership debates, but a practical solution to the reality facing families this winter.”
