Farmers Told to Remain Alert Following Bluetongue Virus Threat
Ella Jackson
After 1 cow was diagnosed with Bluetongue Virus in South East England, the head veterinary officer has alerted farmers across England to be attentive of their livestock.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs have assured the public that the right steps are being taken to prevent outbreak. This includes a regulated area circling the affected farm and increased monitoring of livestock.
The disease poses no threat to humans or farm products however can be deadly to animals infected. Some livestock will remain asymptomatic while others may experience symptoms such as lower milk production.
Regulations are in place to reduce spread of BTV, including documentation proving immunisation of animals being transported.
Christine Middlemiss, head veterinary officer commented, “This detection is an example of our robust disease surveillance procedures in action and it is also a clear reminder for farmers that the disease remains a threat”.
