FDA Authorise Ear Infection Treatment for Canines
Ella Jackson
Members of the US FDA have authorised terbinafine and betamethasone acetate otic gel treatment for use on dogs when treating yeast related ear infections.
The gel treatment is the first of its kind that has been authorised by the FDA for otitis externa, specifically cases involving yeast strains, and the first otic drug that contains no antibiotic component.
Otitis externa is a condition charaterised by inflammation or infection of the outer ear canal. This condition can cause symptoms such as ear pain, itching, redness, and discharge.
This prevents veterinary professionals from employing antibiotics in cases where dogs are diagnosed solely with yeast-related ear infections.
The gel is a prescription only treatment that can only be prescribed and used by animal health specialists.
