Festival goers to be offered STD checks

Members of the NHS Somerset’s chlamydia screening service will be at a music festival this summer to offer young adults the chance to be tested for the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD).

Those aged between 15 and 24 who are attending Glastonbury will get the opportunity to be checked for the condition over the weekend by using one of the DIY urine sample kits that will be at one of the six information points around the site.

People who return the test will receive a free glow-in-the-dark key ring and contraception.

Sara Dove, NHS chlamydia screening service manager, noted the scheme aims to help young adults in the area who may have exposed themselves to the risk of infection.

“The service is completely free, confidential and easy – and so are the test results,” she commented.

Men or women taking part in the programme can choose to receive their test results by phone, letter, email or text message.

According to the NHS, sexually active females under the age of 25 have a one in ten chance of contracting Chlamydia.
