Fish oil supplements ‘may protect against Alzheimer’s disease’

16th July 2014

A new study has indicated that fish oil supplements can offer a number of benefits that could help to protect people against the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Rhode Island Hospital researchers have published research showing that regular use of fish oil supplements can be associated with a significant reduction in cognitive decline and brain atrophy in older adults.

The study involved more than 800 older adults, who received neuropsychological tests and brain magnetic resonance imaging scans every six months. The benefits of the supplements were only observed among those without dementia at the time of enrolment.

Since there is no cure for the neurodegenerative condition, it is important that new ways of preventing Alzheimer's or slowing cognitive decline in normal ageing are found.

Study leader Dr Lori Daiello, of the Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders Center at Rhode Island Hospital, said: "More research is needed, but these findings are promising and highlight the need for future studies to expand the current knowledge of the effects of fish oil supplements use on cognitive aging and Alzheimer's disease."

The health benefits of fish oil supplements are widely known, with more potential uses being found all the time. Earlier this month, a Duke University study suggested they can help to improve the joint health of patients with osteoarthritis.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801735755-ADNFCR
