GDC publishes extended management guidelines

18th February 2008

The General Dental Council (GDC) has published guidance for all dental care professionals in management positions.

It reports that the newly-published information “expands on the GDC standards guidance principle that you should put patients interests before your own or those of any colleague, organisation or business”.

The information is considered particularly relevant for dentists and professionals who are running their own practices and laboratories or who have management roles within healthcare or educational organisations.

Furthermore, the guidelines could help directors of dental bodies and those responsible for conducting clinical trials, the GDC notes.

Its updated guidance warns managers that they have a responsibility to both follow the standards outlined for dental professionals by the GDC and to promote adherence to such standards among other staff in an organisation.

Managers must be aware of a variety of further considerations, including legal responsibilities and issues relating to equality and diversity, the new instructions explain.
