GE Healthcare launches MabSelect PrismA resin for antibody purification

GE Healthcare has announced the launch of MabSelect PrismA, a new protein A chromatography resin that offers advantages in monoclonal antibody purification.

MabSelect PrismA has been developed at the GE Healthcare Life Sciences site in Uppsala, Sweden, and is designed to help biopharmaceutical manufacturers improve their monoclonal antibody purification capacity by up to 40 percent.

The resin is significantly more alkaline-stable than previous solutions, meaning MabSelect PrismA can be cleaned with a higher concentration of sodium hydroxide to better control cross-contamination and bioburden risks.

Other challenges addressed by the new product include the increased upstream titers and improved efficiency due to its stronger binding capacity, which determines how much resin is needed to purify a certain amount of protein. 

Jan Makela, general manager for the GE Healthcare Life Sciences division's BioProcess unit, said: "The thorough research and development work that we have carried out to create MabSelect PrismA sets a new standard for monoclonal antibody purification."

Nearly all monoclonal antibodies use protein A resin as the first purification step because it offers an efficient, common platform for different monoclonal antibodies.
