Genetics ‘key’ to adaptive immunity
The influence of genetics on the human immune system is greater than previously thought, according to new research.
A study from King's College London published in the journal Nature Communications found that genetics are the primary influencer on adaptive immune traits. These are the more complicated responses the body develops when exposed to pathogens, for example building up resistance to chickenpox.
Researchers analysed 23,00 immune traits in 497 adult female twins using data taken from TwinsUK – the country's largest registry of adult twins.
Lead researcher at King's College London Dr Massimo Mangino said the analysis "resulted in some unusual findings".
In addition to genetics playing a greater role in complex responses than once thought, the findings also showed innate responses were more often the result of differences in the environment.
"This discovery could have a significant impact in treating a number of autoimmune diseases," he stated.
