Genzyme announces Mozobil success

Genzyme has revealed a successful clinical trial of its Mozobil brand for treating non-Hodgkins’ lymphoma.

Research conducted by the firm found that the therapeutic met two main endpoints and may improve the outcome for patients undergoing stem cell transplants to combat the disease.

The primary endpoint saw 59 per cent of patients who received Mozobil achieve a threshold of five million CD34+ cells per kilogram of blood collected after four days of treatment.

This represents a threefold increase over traditional therapies and is twice the expected improvement, according to Genzyme.

Meanwhile, the secondary endpoint saw 87 per cent achieve the minimum level of two million cells per kilogram associated with a successful transplant, compared with 47 per cent of patients who received a placebo.

"These are very impressive results with far-reaching clinical importance for patients undergoing a stem cell transplant for lymphoma," said lead investigator Dr John DiPersio.

The announcement follows a successful trial of the company’s Carticel implant designed to reduce pain following knee cartilage repair work.
