Genzyme partners with Arecor on protein therapeutics

14th April 2010

Genzyme is to enter into collaboration with Arecor on the development of new protein-based therapeutics.

The two healthcare firms have already worked together in this field for two years, during which Arecor has demonstrated to Genzyme the advantages its technology holds over traditional protein formulation methods.

Under the new agreement, the companies will now work together closely in order to create high-strength, stable formulations of labile biomolecules.

Arecor has expressed confidence that the combined expertise of the two firms will allow them to meet the “unique challenges” the research will pose.

Dr Robert Mattaliano, group vice-president of therapeutic protein research and development at Genzyme, added: “Genzyme is pleased to establish this strategic partnership in support of our goal to provide stable and convenient dosage forms to patients and their caregivers.”

Last week, Genzyme was granted a recommendation by the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group for its stem cell therapy Mozobil to be used to treat Welsh cancer patients.
