Genzyme presented with award for innovation and growth

Genzyme has been presented with the 2007 James D Watson Helix Award.

The honour recognises ways in which companies have set standards for leadership in scientific innovation and company growth.

Genzyme states that its strong financial performance as well as it securing approval for the first-ever treatment for Pompe disease, have both contributed towards it winning the prize.

Henri A Termeer, chairman and chief executive officer of Genzyme, commented: "We are honoured to be recognised for the work that we have done on behalf of patients.

"This award is particularly meaningful following the approval last year of our treatment for Pompe disease, Myozyme."

He added that the "life-saving therapy" has now brought hope to patients world-wide and highlights the company’s mission innovate to improve the lives of those with debilitating diseases.

Genzyme was founded in Boston in 1981 and now has annual revenues exceeding $3 billion (£1.5 billion).
