GlaxoSmithKline and Plasticell agree stem cell screening collaboration
GlaxoSmithKline has announced a new partnership with Plasticell, a biotechnology company specialising in stem cell screening and cell therapy development.
The deal will see GlaxoSmithKline making use Plasticell's combinatorial stem cell screening technology CombiCult to optimise directed differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to specific blood cell lineages for use in therapeutic research.
CombiCult will be used to screen combinations of molecules provided by GlaxoSmithKline to identify and optimise iPSC differentiation protocols, with the technology allowing simultaneous screening of multiple iPSC lines.
This builds upon the existing working relationship between Plasticell and GlaxoSmithKline, having previously worked together on various stem cell research projects for more than a decade.
Plasticell is co-located at the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst, an emerging cell therapy hub on the site of GlaxoSmithKline's Medicines Research Centre.
Dr Yen Choo, Plasticell's founder and executive chairman, said he believes the company's technology represents an "ideal solution for iPSC differentiation, where high developmental potency and variability between different patient-derived cell lines often frustrates the search for robust and efficient differentiation protocols".
