GlaxoSmithKline drug receives EU approval

21st January 2009

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has said its product alli has received approval to be marketed in Europe.

The treatment – designed to treat obesity and induce weight loss – is the first such therapy to be approved on the continent.

As a result, GSK has said it has plans to launch alli in all 27 member states, for adults whose body mass index is at 28 kg/m2 or more.

Commenting on the approval, the company’s president of consumer healthcare in Europe Manfred Scheske said the approval follows successful for the drug in the US.

He added: “We are very excited about the opportunity to create similar success in Europe and we will be launching alli in pharmacies throughout Europe soon.”

Last month, GSK announced the submission of a marketing authorisation application in the continent for Duodart.

Used as a therapy for male sufferers of moderate to severe effects of benign prostatic hyperplasia, the drug is hoped to be approved in 28 European countries.
