GlaxoSmithKline highlights positive new study data for Cervarix
GlaxoSmithKline has highlighted positive new clinical trial data that supports the strong efficacy performance of its human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine Cervarix.
Analysis published in The Lancet Oncology this month has shown that Cervarix was able to deliver 93 percent efficacy in preventing advanced precancerous lesions in a major new study.
Subjects from the trial were selected as representative of young girls prior to the onset of sexual activity – the target demographic for HPV vaccination programmes – while safety and tolerability results were also positive.
This represents the largest ever efficacy trial of a cervical cancer vaccine to date and reinforces the strong performance of GlaxoSmithKline's drug, which has been proven in past clinical studies.
The findings have been incorporated into the European label for Cervarix, which was updated by the European Commission in September 2011.
Earlier this month, the company also published strong clinical trial data for eltrombopag, an investigational therapy for hepatitis C-related thrombocytopenia.
