GlaxoSmithKline licences new cancer therapy from Adaptimmune

GlaxoSmithKline has exercised the option to obtain an exclusive global licence to a new cancer therapy called GSK3377794 from Adaptimmune.

GSK3377794 is an investigational SPEAR T-cell receptor therapy targeting NY-ESO-1, which is currently being studied in seven phase I/II studies assessing its effectiveness as a treatment for non-small cell lung cancer, metastatic melanoma, ovarian cancer, multiple myeloma, synovial sarcoma, and myxoid round cell liposarcoma.

It has been granted PRIME designation by the European Medicines Agency and breakthrough therapy designation by the US Food and Drug Administration, underlining the significant potential benefits it can provide.

Adaptimmune will receive up to 48 million pounds from GlaxoSmithKline over the course of a transitional period, with successful continuation of development and subsequent commercialisation of GSK3377794 triggering additional payments.

Axel Hoos, senior vice-president for oncology research and development at GlaxoSmithKline, said: "We will continue to explore the potential for this novel cell therapy in multiple tumour types, and in combination with other cancer therapies."

This agreement reflects the fact that oncology is one of the key areas of focus of GlaxoSmithKline's current research and development efforts.
