GlaxoSmithKline names Emma Walmsley as new CEO
GlaxoSmithKline has announced that Emma Walmsley has been selected as its next chief executive officer (CEO), effective as of March 31st 2017.
Ms Walmsley is currently the CEO of GlaxoSmithKline's consumer healthcare division and has been chosen for the top job ahead of the retirement of the incumbent Sir Andrew Witty.
She joined the firm from L'Oreal in 2010, having spent 17 years with the cosmetics company in a range of marketing and general management roles. Prior to her current post, she was president of GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare and has been a member of its corporate executive team since 2011.
The CEO designate will also join the GlaxoSmithKline board of directors from the beginning of next year.
GlaxoSmithKline chairman Philip Hampton said: "Emma is an outstanding leader with highly valuable experience of building and running major global businesses and a strong track record of delivering growth and driving performance in healthcare."
Mr Hampton also paid tribute to the outgoing Sir Andrew, who has been credited with establishing the company's market-leading positions in pharmaceuticals, vaccines and consumer healthcare during his tenure as CEO.
