GlaxoSmithKline reports positive results for Triumeq among women with HIV

GlaxoSmithKline has announced new clinical data showing the benefits treatment-naive women living with HIV can receive from treatment with Triumeq.

Developed by GlaxoSmithKline's affiliate ViiV Healthcare, the dolutegravir/abacavir/lamivudine combination therapy was compared to another therapy option in the phase IIIb ARIA study, with Triumeq offering superior efficacy.

Statistically superior viral suppression rates at week 48 were associated with Triumeq, as well as lower rates of virological failures and discontinuations due to adverse events.

This is an important study as women account for more than half of the almost 35 million adults living with HIV worldwide, but are generally underrepresented in HIV clinical trials.

Dr John Pottage, chief scientific and medical officer of ViiV Healthcare, said: "This trial not only provides physicians with important additional information about Triumeq, it also builds on the strong body of evidence supporting the efficacy of dolutegravir-based regimens in a broad range of patient populations."

ViiV Healthcare was established in November 2009 by GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer to conduct specialised HIV research, with Shionogi agreeing to take part in the company's work in 2012.
