GlaxoSmithKline reports positive trial data for combination COPD therapy

GlaxoSmithKline has reported new clinical trial data that demonstrates the benefits offered by one of its new treatments for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Data from the pivotal phase III FULFIL study has been presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress in London, highlighting the safety and efficacy of the investigational closed triple combination therapy fluticasone furoate/umeclidinium/vilanterol.

It was shown that the study was able to meet its two co-primary endpoints, with a clinically meaningful and statistically significant benefit in lung function and health-related quality of life observed over 24 weeks when compared to an established alternative.

The benefit of treatment with the closed triple therapy was also observed in the subset of patients who received treatment for up to 52 weeks, while statistically significant and clinically meaningful reductions in annual rates of moderate and severe exacerbations were seen.

Dave Allen, head of respiratory research and development at GlaxoSmithKline, said: "Exacerbations are a major cause of morbidity in COPD and reducing these symptomatic and potentially life-threatening episodes is a priority for physicians."

The company announced positive clinical data from a study of another COPD therapy, Relvar Ellipta, earlier this week.
