Government announces ‘hi-tech’ home healthcare sites

The government has announced plans for a number of new healthcare sites that will aim to use modern technology to help elderly people have more independence in their lives, with a focus on those suffering from long-term conditions.

With features including home-testing of blood pressure and blood glucose levels – with results monitored by healthcare professionals – the Telehealth system is designed to reduce the number of emergency admissions to hospital.

Additionally, Telecare devices include monitored systems that perform tasks such as switching on lights or alerting professionals if an elderly person requires immediate assistance.

Under the plans for the scheme announced by the Department of Health, 12 million pounds has been awarded in Cornwall, Kent and Newham to investigate the best means of implementing these schemes.

Patricia Hewitt, health secretary, said: “Improving patient care with new scientific advances and innovation is vital if the NHS is to continue to offer the very best services.”

She added that the use of modern technology does not stop at its introduction into NHS trusts, but should be used further afield help patients successfully self-manage their conditions, with remote devices providing improved independence for those requiring treatment.

Earlier this month, the DoH announced that extra investment in the NHS will result in the introduction of hundreds of new healthcare services across the country over the forthcoming year.
