Government outlines need for greater NHS telehealth usage

The government has outlined its intention to introduce telehealth and telecare services in a wider capacity across the NHS.

Speaking at a recent international congress, care services minister Paul Burstow stated that greater use of remote monitoring systems and long-distance care options could offer the NHS savings of 1.2 billion pounds over five years.

A recent randomised control trial of telecare and telehealth showed that this new operating model can drive a 20 per cent fall in emergency admissions, plus fewer bed days and reduced tariff costs.

Mr Burstow stated that this new technology must be used as part of an integrated government care plan.

He added that it represents "a revolution in personalised healthcare that can improve the lives of three million people and increase their independence and dignity, as well as reduce the time they spend in hospital".

Last month, the minister also highlighted the importance of greater measures to prevent falls and fractures among UK patients as a key priority in terms of achieving savings.
