Greater proportion of legal cases against dentists being successfully defended
A new report from the Dental Defence Union (DDU) has indicated that a growing proportion of legal cases and complaints brought against dental professionals are being defended successfully.
New figures from the organisation indicate that claims against dentists have increased over recent years, but defences against these cases are also improving, with no compensation paid in just under 60 percent of instances during 2015.
According to the DDU, complaints are becoming more common due to the current "adversarial climate", which leads to a rise in the number of "unmeritorious" claims, rather than being the result of any drop in standards.
As such, it welcomed the fact it has been able to see off a majority of these challenges, particularly given that claimants' solicitors carefully select the cases they believe are most likely to succeed.
John Makin, head of the DDU, said: "The climate in which dental professionals work can often seem difficult, but professional standards are very high and our members continue to provide excellent care to the communities they serve."
