Gwenda Thomas supports use of Welsh language in NHS

The deputy minister for social services supports the use of local dialect in the Welsh NHS, she has asserted.

Gwenda Thomas explained that many families are more at ease using their own language, which is why she is committed to strengthening the provision for patients who speak the tongue.

A recent report by the Welsh assembly’s health committee recommended that action should be taken to increase the number of staff employed by the NHS who can speak the country’s dialect.

This action is a clear indication of the government’s dedication to helping families in the area by strengthening the services available to them, Ms Thomas noted.

She concluded: “I want to thank the health and social care professionals who every day recognise just how important it is for people to discuss their concerns in their own language.”

Earlier this month, health minister Edwina Hart announced that the Welsh ambulance service would receive funding to invest in a new communication system.

It aims to allow emergency vehicle controllers to track them better and to help patients be seen to more efficiently.
