H2H Saltend Reduces Industrial Park Emissions by over 30%
Energy firm Equinor has settled on an agreement with industrial gas company BOC for operation and maintenance services, as well as offering Linde Engineering a Front-End Engineering Design contract for the H2H Saltend project.
H2H Saltend is a pioneering hydrogen production facility, creating low-carbon hydrogen alongside carbon capture. It contributes to the development of the Humber as a worldwide centre for low-carbon hydrogen.
The hydrogen and air division capabilities from Linde will be factored into the buildings plan, together with the LCH technology from Johnson Matthey.
Due to be up and running at Saltend Chemicals Park by 2027, H2H Saltend will help to reduce the park’s carbon release by approximately 33%. In order to do this, low carbon hydrogen will either be exchanged for or mixed with natural gas, hence decreasing the carbon intensity of their output.
Each year approximately 890,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide will be kept in the facility, having the same effect as removing 500,000 cars per year.
Working in conjunction with the East Coast Cluster, hydrogen will be carried from there to trade partners looking to lower their carbon output, while simultaneously collecting the gas for secure underwater storage.
By the end of next decade, these plans seek to achieve net zero at the Humber, currently the UK’s largest area of industrial carbon emission production.
Asbjørn Haugsgjerd, Director for the H2H Saltend scheme, expressed that “Linde have demonstrated their expertise and over the last year and through their previous work with this technology and operations.”
“H2H Saltend is a vital first step in creating a low carbon hydrogen economy and achieving net zero in the Humber, safeguarding local industries and creating greater opportunities, whilst helping the UK to tackle climate change.”
