Have your say on banning third-party puppy and kitten sales

In December, Prime Minister Theresa May committed to addressing many animal welfare concerns, including a commitment to do more to close puppy farms and address the terrible conditions found at such farms. Now the government has launched its consultation, “A ban on the commercial third-party sales of puppies and kittens in England”, intended to help eradicate the problem of third-party sales and improve animal welfare. It closes at 11:45pm on 19 September. The Department
for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has endorsed this intent, known as Lucy’s Law, by publishing their own consultation. They want a complete ban on puppy and kitten farms such that anyone who wants to buy or adopt a puppy or kitten under the age of six months has to go directly to a breeder or an animal rescue centre.

Mr Gove said: “A ban on third-party sales will ensure the nation’s much-loved pets get the right start in life. I pay tribute to the Lucy’s Law campaign – spearheaded by PupAid, Care And Respect Includes All Dogs and Canine Action UK, which have fought tirelessly for this step. People who have a complete disregard for pet welfare will no longer be able to profit from this miserable trade.”
