HCA Emphasises Need for Core Values within AI Policies

10th October 2023

‘The AI Roadmap – establishing our future in healthcare communications’ is a new academic essay from the HCA (Healthcare Communications Association).

Written by Elizabeth Mercer, associate director at Langland, and Matt Lewis, international head of artificial and augmented intelligence officer at Inizio Medical, it reads: “The pharmaceutical and communications industries stand on the brink of a revolution… AI, particularly generative AI, may be the defining innovation in our professional lives.”

A huge emphasis of the writing is on companies and institutes developing core values within AI policies.

“The goals we are seeking are equity and equality, for our data to respect the diversity of society and to not reinforce existing biases. Equally, we must ensure that models support decision-making by human actors, not supersede it.”

The necessity of honestly is another theme stressed as important, and organizations are advised to “explain in clear and simple ways how their use of AI impacts employees, partners and customers”.

People utilising AI “should be responsible for ensuring that the generated content produced using generative AI aligns with the organisation’s values, ethics and quality standards”.

Furthermore, it is suggested that AI policies need to be reassessed every three months.

Effective AI strategies “create an environment that fosters innovation while ensuring responsible and ethical use”.
