Health board boss says NHS Wales’ structure is superior to England

17th March 2016

Health board chief executive of Betsi Cadwaladr Gary Doherty says that this Welsh NHS trust is superior to the one he moved from in Blackpool.

Mr Doherty was appointed head of the Welsh board in February and he has criticised the English NHS, commenting that GPs, hospital staff and other employees end up competing against each other rather than working together, reports the BBC.

He further highlighted the benefits of the Welsh NHS, adding: "There's less fragmentation here, what you've got are GPs, hospital doctor, community nurses and other staff all in the same organisation."

Mr Doherty also voiced that it was his decision to go to a Welsh board because he thinks "it is different and because I think it is better".

There are improvements still to be made however, as Mr Doherty feels that waiting times in accident and emergency departments in north Wales need to be looked at as a matter of urgency to get the health board out of special measures.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801814780-ADNFCR
