Health unions call for end to cap on public sector pay rises
A group of 15 health unions has urged prime minister Theresa May to bring an end to the current cap on public sector pay rises.
In a joint letter to the Conservative leader, the unions have called for the government to ditch the policy – which means that NHS staff cannot receive any pay rises above one percent until 2020 at the earliest – in the forthcoming Queen's Speech.
It was pointed out that rising inflation rates have meant that salaries have fallen considerably in real terms since the policy was introduced in 2010, a state of affairs that is having negative repercussions for hiring and staff retention.
The letter said: "The public sector pay cap has forced professionals out of jobs they love. Those who stay are overstretched and under pressure to do ever more with less."
According to the unions, this limitation is having a negative impact on the sustainability of the NHS at a time when the health service is coping with unprecedented pressures, while it was also suggested that dissatisfaction with the policy may explain why Mrs May achieved a disappointing result in the recent general election.
