Hologic tomosynthesis technology shows benefits in new studies

Hologic has announced the publication of three new studies that further underline the benefits of its award-winning 3D mammography, or tomosynthesis, technology.

The studies support the use of the technology in breast cancer screening, particularly when using the lower-dose version of the system, while also underlining the positive outcomes associated with a combined conventional 2D and 3D mammography exam approach.

Two of the studies – one carried out by Oslo University, the other by the University of Pittsburgh – showed using 2D images generated from 3D mammography slices can reduce radiation doses and shorten patient exam time, while maintaining all the clinical benefits of 3D.

Meanwhile the third, from Massachusetts General Hospital, demonstrated the benefits of two-view tomosynthesis compared to the standard one-view approach.

David Harding, senior vice-president and general manager for women's health at Hologic, said: "These three new studies add to the growing body of research supporting the direction we have taken with this game-changing technology."

The system was recently showcased to industry professionals in the Middle East at the Arab Health Congress in Dubai at the end of last month.
