Hospira states new technology reinforces market position

Hospira’s introduction of a new device reinforces the company’s position as a leading provider of safety medication administration products, it has asserted.

The latest technology, which combines the GemStar SP infusion system with GemStar Infusion Suite software, is a stand-alone, personal computer-based appliance that aims to combat the 1.5 million medication errors which occur every year.

It helps to streamline the programming process for clinicians and has several security features to help minimise the risk of mistakes when measuring out doses of treatments.

Some of the mechanisms the compact and portable pump contains include four keypad lockouts, integral set-based free flow protection and mandatory confirmation screens.

Dr Steven Pregulman, global medical director for device development at Hospira, commented: “The new GemStar Infusion Suite software allows clinicians to quickly recall a pre-configured drug safety suite for safer and more efficient drug delivery.”

In February 2009, the company released its results for the last fiscal year and stated it had delivered another 12 months of positive performance.
