Idexx Laboratories launches RealPCR

Idexx Laboratories, a provider of veterinary products, has unveiled its latest product – the IDEXX Leptospira RealPCR Test.

It is capable of detecting infection earlier than traditional methods and allows for more timely and effective treatment of the life-threatening disease canine leptospirosis.

The condition brings about severe acute kidney disease, which can lead to permanent damage and even death in dogs, and is usually picked up with microscopic agglutination tests.

However, canines with the disease can often develop symptoms before antibodies detected by these tests develop.

“With the ability to accurately detect infection earlier, the Leptospira spp. RealPCR Test helps veterinarians treat patients with specific therapy earlier, which significantly improves patient prognosis,” explained Jane Robertson, the head of internal medicine for Idexx Laboratories.

Earlier this year, the firm launched an online service that provides real-time access to case results, giving professionals more freedom to access information anywhere at anytime.
