Immune System drug shows ‘spectacular’ results for Prostate Cancer patients

UK doctors have discovered that immune system boosting drugs have shown success rates in saving the life of men who are suffering with terminal prostate cancer diagnosis.
Currently, Immunotherapy is routine practice for some skin and lung cancer, and an early stage trial showed that this approach also works on prostate cancer, the UK’s most common cancer in men, and the third biggest killer.
Researcher Professor Johann de Bono commented on the findings: “This is the first evidence that a subset of prostate cancer patients do spectacularly well on immunotherapy. We have several patients who have had a complete response. It is a new arrow in the quiver for men with lethal prostate cancer, it’s a big deal for these patients.”
With researchers hinting that immunotherapy works best in patients with heavily mutated cancers, there is a strong chance that the therapy will not work on all prostate cancer patients.
Nell Barrie from Cancer research UK states that the next course of action is to “find out how to tell which men will benefit from taking the drug”.
